Description:
The ground floor (55 sq.m.) is composed of two cross vault rooms, one flat ceiling room and court yard (8 sq.m.). The first floor is composed of one room with gable roof (18 sq.m.) and terrace (35 sq.m.). Inside the house the huge masonry fire place is to be noted, besides the typical local ceilings.
The house needs some renovations works such as plaster, piping, light fixture, drainage, outer and inner doors, at the end of which, four persons can be easily housed.
SPECCHIA
The property arises in the historical center of Specchia, whose name originates from “Specchie”, a heap of stones (of considerable dimensions also) dating back to Iron Age, used for the defense and surveillance of the territory. The remoteness form the sea and being situated on an hilltop, in a totally flat area, made Specchia a safe place for the inhabitants of the early Middle Age, so that the population increased in the short time.
The present dwelled centre originated nevertheless around the year one thousand and was, during centuries, under the rule of several noble families, among them: the Monteronis, Orsinis, Del Balzos, Guarinis, Protonobilissimos, De Capuas, Della Rattas, Astores, Falcones, Pignatellis, Ripas and Risolos, till the abolition of the feudalism in 1806.
There are several monuments of particular artistic importance: count Risolo's palace, built in the eighteenth century on the remains of a former sixteenth century building; Scoto's palace, with a wonderful seventeenth century facade; Madonna del Passo hipogeal church; Black Franciscan's convent, with a church endowed of valuable Gothic finishings, the chapel in honour of Saint Catherine of Alessandria and the crypt bearing frescoes in Byzantine style; Saint Eufemia's church, dating back to the year one thousand.
In recent years, the historical center of Specchia, located on the slopes of the “Salentine Murgia”, at an height of 131 m. above sea level, has been made an object of renovations by the local public administrators and private citizens.
Today the center of the town appears as a pedestrian area well trimmed that, especially during summer time, welcomes tourists coming from near beaches and all the people that are spending their vacations in a rented or owned house. The Tourism Association Council of the Italian Communes (Anci), established in 2001, has included the historical center of Specchia among the “most beautiful burg of Italy”.
