Description:

The house is situated in the historical centre of Castrignano del Capo, at the end of a typical alley, where silence and peace prevail. The property, placed at ground floor, is composed of two cross vault room and one barrel vault where a huge masonry fire-place stays in. The roof is made by a solar stone paving and it is connected to ground floor by a masonry stair-case.

The house needs some refurbishment, at the end of that two or three persons can easily live in. At short distance from the town (3 km) there are the rocky coasts of the Adriatic Sea and sandy beaches of the Ionian coast on the other side. On the contrary Santa Maria of Leuca is 3 km away also.

CASTRIGNANO DEL CAPO

The place was already inhabitated in the Paleolithic Era, as numerous fossil relics found out in the Devil’s grottos, Three Doors, Titti and Elephant’s cove bear witness too. Successively, in Roman Age, a castrum (castle) was built on, then enlarged after the destruction of Vereto and Leuca. The town aroses around the year one thousand indeed, as a sanctuary for the refugees of the above mentioned localities. Initially the town was a D’Almeto’s fief (1280), afterwards the same was handed down to De Canianos, Pignatellis, Bilittas, Ayerbos, Della Rattas, Della Barlieras, De Frisis and to Fabrizio Guarini.

The Mother Church of Saint Michael built in Baroque style, still keeps the pre-existent traits of a Renaissance church. Between the hamlets of Castrignano, at Giuliano can be still seen a menhir, some Basilian crypts and the X century small church of Saint Peter; at Salignano there are the little Baroque church of Saint Joseph and a nice sixteenth century defensive tower; at Leuca the Shrine of the Madonna is, historically, a very important monument built, probably, upon the ruins of the ancient Athena’s temple, object of unceasing pilgrimages in that time as are today for the Christian temple.
